Classifications of Scissor Lifts & Aerial Lift Platforms
A scissor lift consists of a series of crisscrossed steel arms that are linked to make an X pattern. When raised vertically, the X pattern of support holds the rectangular platform that is located on top of the lifting apparatus. There are support railings along the edges of the lifting mechanism to be able to help secure the workers' tools and keep them safe.
The scissor lift has a low profile, best used for smooth surfaces like concrete, pavement and hard dirt surfaces. These equipment utilize either a combustion engine or electric motor to be able to power the lifting apparatus and move the lift. The operator would have to move the lift itself if she or he has to travel horizontally, because the lift apparatus only operates the lift vertically.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lift
The standard scissor lift and the rough terrain scissor lift use the same lifting technology. The main difference is that the rough terrain units feature a different base that is particularly designed for surfaces which are uneven. These units also provide higher ground clearance and oversized all terrain tires. The rough terrain scissor lifts use 4-wheel drive so as to navigate through difficult and muddy terrain without problems.
Telescopic Boom Lift
The telescopic boom lift utilizes a telescoping beam that elevates both diagonally and vertically. This model has a small work platform that houses controls in order to operate the boom. The controls work with a combustion engine so as to power the hydraulics that move the lift and power the boom. The telescopic boom lift is an independent lift model and has off-road capable tires.
Articulating Boom Lift
There are two telescopic booms on the articulating boom lift. These are attached with a moving elbow apparatus. This lifting equipment has a small work platform or a bucket that is outfitted with hand controls in order to control the boom. These are stand-alone lifts that are powered by a combustion engine. Articulating boom lifts are available with either off-road or hard surface tires. These lifts are designed in order to reach on top of and over top of buildings.
Aerial Mast Lift
The aerial mast lift utilizes a telescopic mast in order to raise a work platform vertically into the air. Usually, these lifts are pneumatic powered or electrically powered and are self-propelled machines. These machines offer an ideal solution for working in high racks in narrow warehouse aisles. It is important to note that aerial mast lifts are not recommended for off-road application and are limited to vertical movement.
